UNLOCK YOUR REAL ESTATE SUCCESS
RETI Blog

Have you ever finished a full day of work and thought:
“I was busy all day… but what did I actually achieve?”
You answered WhatsApps.
You returned emails.
You attended a viewing.
You posted something on social media.
You spoke to a client.
You updated some paperwork.
You probably put out a few fires along the way.
And yet, when you look at your day, you realise you didn't actually get to the things you needed to do.
You didn't prospect.
You didn't follow up with those leads.
You didn't work on that listing opportunity.
You didn't have the important conversations.
And somehow, tomorrow already looks just as busy.
This is one of the biggest traps in real estate.
Being busy feels productive. But busy and productive are not the same thing.
In fact, your day can be completely full and still not move your business forward.
Nicolene Hamaty often comes back to a very simple RETI principle: your time is valuable, and if you don't decide where it goes, something else will decide for you. The IMPLEMENT Membership specifically highlights how quickly client calls, viewings, administration, marketing and interruptions can fill an agent's day without necessarily creating income.
So let's talk about the difference.

Productive means you're doing the right things.
That's the difference.
You can spend two hours organising your inbox.
You can spend another hour making your Canva graphics look perfect.
You can spend 45 minutes scrolling through property content to “see what other agents are doing”.
You can spend another hour moving things around in your calendar.
At the end of the day, you've done a lot.
But did any of those activities create a conversation with a potential client?
Did they move a buyer closer to an appointment?
Did they create a listing opportunity?
Did they move an existing deal forward?
Did they strengthen a relationship that could lead to future business?
Sometimes the answer is yes.
But sometimes the answer is simply:
“I don't know.”
And that's the problem.
Your calendar can be full while your pipeline is empty.
Money can be replaced.
Leads can be generated again.
Technology can be upgraded.
But once today's eight hours are gone, they're gone.
That's why time management isn't really about squeezing more tasks into your day.
It's about making sure your time is being used on the things that matter.
As Nicolene explains in the IMPLEMENT Membership, real estate is particularly time-sensitive because it is a service-based business. Your service is closely connected to your time, which makes time one of your most valuable resources.
And this is where you need to start asking yourself a better question.
Don't ask:
“How much did I do today?”
Ask:
“What did I do today that moved my business forward?”
That's a very different question.
Not Every Activity Is a Money-Making Activity

This doesn't mean administration isn't important.
It doesn't mean client service isn't important.
It doesn't mean marketing isn't important.
All of those things have a place in your business.
But they don't all have the same priority.
For example:
Checking your emails is an activity.
Following up with a qualified seller who wants to meet with you is an activity.
But the second activity has a much more direct connection to potential income.
Similarly:
Creating a social media post is an activity.
Creating content specifically designed to start conversations with potential sellers in your area is a more purposeful activity.
The question isn't:
“Is this work?”
The question is:
“Is this the right work for me to be doing right now?”
That's the shift.

There are many distractions in a real estate business, but three are particularly easy to fall into.
Your phone pings.
You respond.
WhatsApp comes through.
You respond.
Email arrives.
You respond.
Someone calls.
You answer.
Then you return to the task you were doing.
Except now you have to remember where you were.
Then another notification comes through.
And the cycle starts again.
The problem isn't that you're communicating with clients.
Communication is important.
The problem is allowing every incoming message to dictate what you do with your time.
Every interruption breaks your focus.
And when your focus is continually broken, simple tasks can take much longer than they should. The IMPLEMENT Membership uses the example of a task that could take 15 minutes becoming an hour because of repeated interruptions.
You don't necessarily need to respond to everything the second it arrives.
You need a system that allows you to respond without allowing every notification to control your day.
Another productivity killer?
Jumping between tasks.
One minute you're writing a listing description.
Then you're checking a client's email.
Then you're renaming property photographs.
Then you're updating your CRM.
Then you're back to the listing description.
Then you remember you haven't posted today.
So you open Instagram.
Thirty minutes later, you're wondering why you opened Instagram in the first place!
This is why batching similar tasks can make such a difference.
If you have several listings to update, do them together.
If you have administrative tasks, group them.
If you have content to create, consider creating several pieces in one focused session rather than starting from scratch every day.
The goal is to reduce the amount of mental switching you're doing. Nicolene's productivity training specifically recommends batching similar tasks because repeatedly switching between systems and activities uses unnecessary mental energy.
Simple is powerful.
3. Starting the Day Without a Plan
This one is probably the easiest trap to fall into.
You arrive at the office.
Open your laptop.
Open your phone.
Check your messages.
See an email.
Deal with that.
Then another thing pops up.
Deal with that.
Before you know it, it's lunchtime.
And suddenly you realise:
“I haven't done what I actually planned to do.”
The problem isn't that you didn't work.
You worked.
You were busy.
You just didn't have a clear direction.
Nicolene's recommendation is wonderfully simple: identify your top three priorities for the following day before that day starts.
You don't need an elaborate productivity system.
You need clarity.

Start by looking at your business through the lens of income-producing activities.
Ask yourself:
Because conversations create opportunities.
Because appointments move opportunities forward.
Because listings create inventory and future opportunities.
Because deals don't move themselves.
Because today's contact can become tomorrow's client, referral or repeat business.
These activities deserve protected time.
That doesn't mean you ignore everything else.
It means you stop allowing low-priority activities to take the best hours of your day.
Here's something worth thinking about:
When are you at your best?
Maybe you're sharp first thing in the morning.
Maybe you're better late morning.
Maybe your energy increases in the afternoon.
Whatever your peak hours are, don't automatically give them to administration.
Your best time should be protected for the activities that require your best energy.
The IMPLEMENT training refers to these as your peak hours—the periods when you can take buyers out, conduct listing presentations, generate leads and have conversations that can directly create business.
Your admin can often fit around those activities.
Your money-making activities shouldn't always have to fit around your admin.
That's a very different way of looking at your calendar.
This is probably the biggest misconception.
We think productivity means:
“How can I fit another five things into my day?”
But what if productivity actually means:
“What can I stop doing?”
What can you delegate?
What can you batch?
What can you automate?
What can you schedule?
What can you simplify?
What doesn't need to happen today?
What are you doing simply because you've always done it that way?
And perhaps most importantly:
What are you doing because it makes you feel busy, rather than because it creates a result?
Those are difficult questions.
But they're good questions.
One of the most important principles in the RETI approach is that knowing what to do isn't enough.
You have to actually do it.
The START Programme makes this distinction very clearly: knowledge gives you potential power, but the action of implementing what you know is what creates the result.
The same principle applies to productivity.
You can read 20 productivity books.
You can download five planning apps.
You can watch endless videos about time management.
You can create the world's most beautiful colour-coded calendar.
But if you don't use that knowledge to change what you actually do every day, nothing changes.
The goal isn't to have a better-looking schedule.
The goal is to build a better business.
If you know you're spending too much time being busy and not enough time working on the activities that actually move your business forward, this is exactly where IMPLEMENT Membership can help.
IMPLEMENT is built around one simple idea:
